Mode of continental breakup of marginal seas

چکیده

Abstract We investigated the continent-ocean transition (COT) structure of three main marginal seas in western Pacific Ocean (South China Sea, Coral and Woodlark Basin) to determine tectono-magmatic processes acting during continental breakup. The COT formed from activity a low-angle normal fault system localizing deformation final rifting. Extension was contemporaneous with magmatic activity, including volcanic edifices, dikes, sills distalmost parts these basins. shows sharp juxtaposition space time crust against igneous oceanic crust, its overall differs that magma-poor or magma-rich passive-margin archetypes. propose this mode breakup is characteristic due high extension rates imposed by kinematic forces nearby subduction zones. Revealed context seas, resulting structures highlight underestimated diversity mechanisms.

Mantle mixing and continental breakup magmatism

The frequent formation of large igneous provinces during the opening of the Atlantic Ocean is a surface manifestation of the thermal and chemical state of convecting mantle beneath the supercontinent Pangea. Recent geochemical and geophysical findings from the North Atlantic igneous province all point to the significant role of incomplete mantle mixing in igneous petrogenesis. On the basis of a...

Marginal stability of thick continental lithosphere

[1] Laboratory and numerical experiments show that when a chemically different layer overlies a hotter but otherwise denser layer, analogous to continental mantle lithosphere over asthenosphere, convective stability depends strongly on both the critical Rayleigh number and the buoyancy number, B, of the lithosphere-like layer. Sufficient cooling at low buoyancy number results in an oscillatory ...

The initiation of segmented buoyancy-driven melting during continental breakup

Melting of the mantle during continental breakup leads to magmatic intrusion and volcanism, yet our understanding of the location and dominant mechanisms of melt generation in rifting environments is impeded by a paucity of direct observations of mantle melting. It is unclear when during the rifting process the segmented nature of magma supply typical of seafloor spreading initiates. Here, we u...

Wave Climate and Wave Mixing in the Marginal Ice Zones of Arctic Seas, Observations and Modelling

The wind/wave climatology for the Arctic Seas will be developed based on altimeter observations. It will have a major scientific and applied significance as presently there is no reference climatology for this region of the ocean available. The new versions of wave models for the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas will include new physics that is already under development, and the novel physics presentl...
